The ISPs, their lobbyists, the politicians whose campaigns they donate to, and the revolving door of government regulators who were and will be employed by said ISPs definitely care.


Signal has the perception of being more secure simply because it isn't owned by Facebook. I will never trust a Facebook server with private messages, despite both Signal and WhatsApp having the same security features on paper.


Same with me.

* made it free

* stopped all other monetization efforts (paid api gateways etc)

just to provide free messaging service to everyone.

I have two explanations:

* either he felt it was a threat to his future messenging monopoly

or

* (and this is already not a secret anymore) they wanted to feed the data into their already huge tracking and ad serving network.

Both of those are good enough reasons for me to leave as I care about healthy competition and my future privacy.

But maybe the biggest reason why is because they lied to me: they promised to be the service that provided a good messaging service in exchange for a modest fee. They were profitable and yet sold out.


Another possibility is that Zuckerberg's plans were destroyed (or at least delayed) by EU ruling[0], so he didn't get what actually expected.

"An evil plan" might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I think he might have expected more (read more private data or ad push) from WhatsApp users than he currently can get. Of course, that's just speculation, but as you've originally mentioned, it makes no business sense for Facebook to maintain a free messaging app with no strings attached.

If you are going to audit something for its security features, you pretty much have to start with a disassembled binary, don't you?


Purely on the fundamentals, you could also start with the published source code, build it, and see whether the output matched the binary you're auditing.

In practice, that's unlikely to work, but it could work.


The problem isn't verifying that the source was used for some particular binary, the problem is that when you read source code, the names of functions and variables will impact your understanding of what they do. If you were to take the source code and remove all comments and randomize every symbol name, then you might be okay.


That's a problem, sure, but it doesn't suggest at all that "real security analysis" means starting with an obfuscated blob and reversing it. It suggests that you're better off doing both kinds of analysis. Variable names can lead your thoughts in certain directions and make it more difficult to see certain execution paths. Obfuscated blobs won't lead your thoughts much of anywhere they weren't already inclined to go -- but they make it much more difficult to see all execution paths.

Not only that, but the amount of viral payload went up after treatment. Additionally his white blood cell count went up, and he got a rash and nausea a couple of days after trying this, which could point to his immune system attacking his homebrew injection. This was painful to read, and I won't be surprised if his future attempts with a larger dose result in serious life-threatening effects.


He mentioned viewing his own blood as poison after the HIV diagnosis. I can't even imagine what that's like. Definitely empathize with his need to be rid of it, but hopefully he _fully_ understands that he's experimenting with his own life, and that treatment for HIV in modern medicine means you can live a long and happy life.

Note that cause and effect have not been established here. This guy has been going without HAART two years, rashes and nausea are probably not terribly uncommon. The fact that the white blood cell count went up is likewise unsurprising: it’s a typical symptom of an unspecific immune response after infection, which is exactly what you’d expect if you inject yourself with foreign organic material. It’s puzzling that the article didn’t explain this because it’s entirely expected.


Their demo car uses Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, which are also used on the Buggati Chiron and Koenigsegg Agera RS (which recently set two records for fastest 0-400kph-0 and fastest production car road speed). These tires are street legal.

The Roadster is significantly faster than other supercars from 0-60 on the same tires, so the advantage must come from much more efficient anti-wheel slipping from the three electric motors coupled to AWD. This dramatic speed advantage is probably a result of the ability to quickly alter the power output per wheel to minimize efficiency losses from breaking traction.


FWIW, all of the hypercars on the market have custom compounds, so the fact they're both called "Pilot Sport Cup 2" by Michelin doesn't really matter all too much.


Back up or sync important contacts and data, and then do a factory reset to restore the original OS. Make sure to turn off auto-updates as it will keep downloading them after the restore. It's a shame that phones keep losing features like micro SD.

Phones keep losing features like micro SD (and like end-user replaceable batteries) because too many purchasers do not value those items highly enough to refuse to buy any phone that lacks an SD card slot or a user-replaceable battery.

Start refusing to buy any phone which lacks a micro SD slot, and the manufacturers will bring back the micro SD slots (granted, purchasers need to send the makers feedback that they refused to buy phone X due to lack of a microSD (and lack of a user replaceable battery)).

But buying a phone (any phone) which lacks one or the other simply signals to the makers that it is ok to drop those features, because the phone still sells.

I bought a brand new Android phone about 4-5 months ago. It has both a microSD slot (now holding a 128G SD card) and a user replaceable battery. I picked it because it had those features and I valued their presence. If enough others would get fed up with the lack of one or both, and start refusing to buy any phone without one or both, things would turn around.


I don't think that's so clear cut. I'm looking for a new phone now and I refuse to look at anything without a headphone jack. I've been repeatedly told online and by my friends that I'm weird - the headphone jack is dead, the ship has sailed, it's too late now etc etc. But how else can I vote on this if not with my wallet? I want a phone with a headphone jack but the choices are becoming narrower and narrower - and it seems that even picking up something with a jack does not necessarily send a right signal. Look at the original Pixel - it was Google's pride and joy that it still has a headphone jack while the iphone doesn't. Fast forward to today - Pixel 2 doesn't have a jack and no one cares.

And this is exactly the problem. That no one cares. If enough cared, the first phone without a jack (iPhone, right?) would have been a sales flop, and maybe the message would have gotten back to leave the jack in the phone.

Instead, it sold, which tells the makers that dropping the jack was no big deal, people still bought it anyway.


Why would people value an SD card if the apps all refuse to use it?

The entire thing is a shit storm, every player seems to be against the end user (that is paying for everything, go figure). There's a protection racket on the form of patent rights enabling the shit to go on, but it can not reasonably survive on this shape for very long.

Valid point, but the apps may just be refusing because most phones don't have an SD card anymore, and the authors are either being lazy or don't care (I don't know which) and simply failing to code in support for something they think seldom exists anywhere.

Although in my case, all my apps that I care about using the SD card are using the SD card. But then again I have 98% FDroid apps installed, so those may just be better behaved apps.

Both of Samsung's flagships have microsd. I just wish they had a swappable battery and a flat screen.


Well even the existence of a Micro SD slot isn't enough. My girlfriend's phone had a Micro SD slot ... yet most apps refused to install there or write data there so everything was crammed into the 4GB built-in storage.

That's a great book. I remember when my old ISP provided access to a free usenet service. This was a standard practice that stopped 5-10 years ago.


Tesla's console is the embodiment of form over function for UI. It looks beautiful having a flowing button-free cockpit, but I'd rather be able to adjust settings without looking away from the road. Whatever happened to HUDs? It seems like a HUD with a dial on the steering wheel would let you have the best of both worlds.


It's the reason why Netflix on Chrome and Firefox isn't in 1080p. Due to DRM support Netflix supports 1080p on Edge though.


This is the first phone with an 120hz screen, which surprises me. I really thought Samsung would be the first. I wonder if it's a Samsung panel? I'm glad to see that higher refresh rates are making their way from monitors & TVs into handheld devices. Refresh rate really does make a difference for me, even for something like reading text off a screen. I get less eyestrain from a higher refresh rate, but this could be anecdotal.

Sidenote: they missed a great chance to make the camera flash RGB. That's low-hanging fruit for a gaming peripherals company.


According to The Verge it's a Sharp IGZO panel. Which make sense since Sharp already released a phone under their own brand in Japan with a 120 Hz panel.


So the phone is probably built by Sharp. Or maybe not.

I do wonder if this panel is designed for VR gaming, I can't think of any 'microwave oven display' grade applications for such a panel.


It is a sharp panel, but they are using the phone product peipe of nextbit , the mobile phone company that Razor acquired last year.


I thought refresh rate doesn't matter so much with LCD displays when you're reading a mostly static image (A book as an example), but maybe PWM or dithering is a factor as well in terms of eyestrain where higher refresh rates can benifit (of course the concept of refresh rate with PWM is a bit of a misnomer)


the reviewer seemed to indicate they could tell the ui was much smoother and snappier because of the refresh rate. not sure how noticeable it is

I seem to recall a Lumia device shipping with a 120Hz display, too, but I might have imagined that since I can’t find it now.


It's using react.js, maybe try unfiltering the site before heading to the comment section to tell everyone how much you don't care.

This seems like an interesting way to do research on the best ways to convert these users who don't want to pay outright. Maybe selectively show ads to the free users?
