This is similar to how I evolved the AI for my game Hexborne (Think X-Com meets Magic: The Gathering). I had agents designing sets of behavioral heuristics for bots (as "genes"), then enter them into 10k+ match tournaments in an iterative process. After each tournament agents could inspect all the heuristics and try to craft updated heuristics to improve their performance. Winning heuristics got a full statistical validation before being rolled into the baseline set that all agents build on top of.
To multitask I did all this over a multiplayer game server to harden the netcode and ferret out softlocks.
That's a side effect of people bashing the em-dash and the labs rushing to correct. The period is the most common replacement (along with some minor tweaks to sentence structure), so now that models are being RL'd away from the em-dash the models are overusing a new construction.
That's stupid. People didn't bash the em dash because it was an em dash. They bashed it because it made it obvious it was AI. If your product is so good why are your customers ashamed of using it?
Honest take: people aren't ashamed of using AI, they're trying to avoid being cancelled by rabidly anti-AI ideologues who would hate AI output even if it was the best thing they'd ever seen.
It's quite possible that with "infinite" energy we could do mass scale carbon capture to offset the increased temperatures by rolling back the greenhouse effect.
This is basic thermodynamics, not greenhouse gases. If you put some amount of energy into a system with a fixed surface area, you will get a minimum equilibrium temperature.
Greenhouse gases and Earth’s internal nuclear decay engine make the situation worse, but even without them this would boil the oceans.
AI can totally identify optimizations within a paradigm without human intervention. What it isn't good at now is deciding to try totally new paradigms. Humans aren't great at this either, though it's more cultural in our case.
They already started slow rolling episodes that are already done, no doubt they'll create periodic view windows for things that you'll miss, then make that same content "extra charge" outside those windows, to try and extract extra payments or make you wait until after the next billing date to watch something.
Unless they do a general mobilization, they've already lost. They can hit Ukraine with missiles, but they're losing territory and their rate of attrition is extreme. If they do a general mobilization they might beat Ukraine, but that will likely result in a full political collapse.
Sam is sketchier on a personal level, but judged just on the words coming out of their mouths, he's also much less paternalistic/controlling and more customer focused.
I think any amount of 'paternalistic/controlling' turns out to have been justified when, after dismantling the safety teams and pretending not to know what safety is, OpenAI had the HuggingFace series of scandals. You can dislike the idea of safety and people talking about safety, but not only is the evidence right there, but OpenAI came out shamefacedly and literally agreed with Amodei's statements, including that they agreed to pace the frontier.
