I think it's all about incentives. The power to governance was given to prolific and tenured accounts who wanted to govern. Over the long timeframe their incentive averages to making their life easier and keeping the governance. Wikipedia is going through something similar.


Worry not, Pelicans on bicycles had been ranking pretty high on your favorite search engine for a while. I struggle to imagine a world in which it was not already scraped and turned into training data by at least one provider:

1. Models need to be good at the questions we ask them, not the questions we could ask them.

2. The questions, at least partially, are correlated with information people consume.

3. People mostly consume viral content.

4. Ergo you should scrape viral content for training data.


Probably it was added to the training data on the first day when this benchmark was on HN main page. It’s a bad benchmark since then. I don’t know why people still rate it high. Basically, every benchmark becomes pointless after it was published. They are good only to have a picture at the time they’re published first, and not after.


If it was added to the training data on day one, why can't any of the models draw a decent picture of a pelican riding a bicycle?


Most of them were completely unrecognizable back then. Compared to those, this is a huge achievement.


The author does not call it out, but I think the point is that it's not only the dock. I've been struggling with MBP wakeup issues for a while. We have a whole zoo of various apple devices attached to a number of docks. All of the monitors are Odyssey Neo G9. TL:DR an issue with MBP port, MBP to Dock link, Dock, Dock to Monitor link, or the monitor itself could cause the unplugging dance.

In addition, it takes some time for Apple to squash bugs after releasing new hardware or software. M5s used to be unreliable with Anker TB4 until 1-2 months ago.


Us old people have the idea of peripherals as input (keyboard, mouse) or output (monitor, printer) - but they've all been input/output for two decades or more; and Thunderbolt and friends are much more like an Ethernet network (reliability of Wake on LAN, anyone?) than they are simple point-to-point connections.

Meaning - anything could be the device preventing what you expect to happen, even if it looks like it should be impossible and have nothing to do with it.


HDMI CEC is the bane of my (home theater) existence.

Which device just woke every other device up at 4am?

Which device just shut everything down while I was in the middle of a movie?

CEC and eARC piss me off to no end - it was all working perfectly for over a year and now the receiver refuses to cooperate (or maybe it's the TV, who knows) and you have to cycle things by hand like a meanderthal.


I struggled with a dock and a MBP and connecting consistently to a monitor. It was a high-quality USB-C to HDMI cable. I was sure it wasn't that.

Turns out it was that.


Be honest now, it would take at least a few months for the rest of us.


My understanding is that, if confirmed, this demonstrates that AI can find novel solutions. This is a strong counterpoint to generative-AI-is-strictly-limited-to-training-data.

we've had AlphaFold for a while. it's not a novel that we have ML solutions that can find, erm, novel solutions.

however, by and large, most LLMs as typically used by most individuals aren't solving novel problems. and in those scenarios, we often end up with regurgitated/most common/lowest common denominator outputs... it's a probability distribution thing.


Put in the hands of great mathematicians, pencil and paper proved able to write proofs of open problems.

significantly and dramatically are two different things. I was sceptic when buying it but have no problem using the display with privacy screen on, and dont see that much difference in brightness, even in direct sunlight, fwiw.

Bonus with it on you can stretch your battery life, only half the pixels actually active saves quite some battery, who knew!


You’re paying more for less brightness.


Only if you turn it on for the whole screen at all times, and you are still getting a privacy screen out of it so its not a loss with no benefits.
