It can be smart and not knowledgeable, as long as all the data is in the question you really don't need much in term of general knowledge, it might be even beneficial to stay on track. It mostly depend son what you do with it. For example in the doom demo I don't think you need astra level knowledge to know "enemy = bad" and "enemy is at my left = turn gun left"

It is exhausting to keep up with model releases yes, much like it was for a while during the Cambrian explosion of FE frameworks, eventually tech seems to work out to consolidation.

But more so it seems there is Fear of missing out (FOMO) in our behaviours. The reality is, if whatever model you are using are good for your purpose, well, keep on it.

Agreed. During comp sci we got to re-implement various algos of networks, OS, database, firmware.. and it all gave complimentary intuitions that were useful when tackling practical implementations and bottlenecks.

I don't think I'd say rarely. Companies rarely allocate the design resources to produce that, but the companies that do are typically much larger, so the actual number of individual developers that get rich mocks is probably closer to 40-50%.


I’d say rarely in the sense that out of the 500 times (not really that much over 30 years) I’ve built similar things, I got UX mockups this detailed maybe 10% pf the time.


Depends who you work with, what's the intention, budget, etc. I'd agree this is a really good one.

I'm used to incremental Figma wireframe -> final product and working together with a designer.

Unfortunately, as soon as they can’t find work, everybody interested in the more easily automated dev work will suddenly become very interested in up-skilling into all other kinds of dev work. So then you have an excess supply, which means little job security and littler salaries. Developers were in the cool kid club in SV because it was more painful to fill dev roles than to treat developers with kid gloves. Without high labor demand, there is no leverage for developers. Increasingly, management has the leverage. Oh well.


To the models you say for coding, can you give an example of what you code?

I find them insufficient for my projects (mid sized), but curious what people see working.


I use local models like qwen to do refactoring; the code and concept already exist, they need refining.

I use sota models for concept, implementation plans, and initial deployment.

I find that local models can perform at a very high level if given a very strict environment and the already bounded rules of an existing code base.
