I am not sure if this factors into it but an interesting difference between dairy and eggs and most other types of farms is that those are highly perishable. Grain can be stored and released gradually to even out market gyrations but dairy is just lost if they don’t match supply closely with demand in real time.
Yeah, that's a fair point but it still seems like a huge delta.
And my rabbit hole over the last couple days has led me to spend a bunch of time looking into Fonterra, which is the farmers processing Coop that happened in NZ when they got rid of their quota system. It's turned NZ into the largest milk product exporter on earth, and their whole strategy is processing milk into more shelf stable products. Cheese and Butter is about 20% the remainder is skim milk powder, whole milk powder, whey protein, and caseins.
Anyhow, all of this is to say, that there are solutions that ensure no milk goes to waste by processing it into more shelf stable ingredients, all of which have massive demand on the global markets. Whether we do much of this in Canada, I am not sure, but, feels like a missed opportunity if not, and likely partially caused by a lack of necessity to innovate due to the artificial moat.
Eggs, haven't looked into but presumably similar to milk in that it can be processed into shelf stable powders.
But, on the poultry front, beef, pork, etc, are all in the 92% of farms group, managed by subsidies, so, while chickens have a shorter lifespan, I don't see why we can manage cow and pork farms with subsidies, but not chicken.
Health insurance in America is—quite uniquely—the deep end of the pool in the whole capitalism v humanity conundrum. I think a lot of Americans feel that viscerally and the widespread support for Luigi was symbolic of how truly fucked up that country is in general.
It’s a function of relative scale. If you’re a Fortune 100 CEO there is still a point where you would quarterback a sale, but that would be like… a $10 billion+ contract with the federal government.
The point of group projects is not to make the best project, it’s to learn to navigate working with other people and all the messiness that entails. Soft skill development and the slackers are a feature not a bug. Doing group projects solo completely defeats the point of the exercise—I’m surprised you got approval from any profs for that.
You are not completely wrong but you are missing out a lot too. It is accountability without authority issue.
Yes, learning to navigate working with other people is important. But why are you learning that? Because you will need that in work place.
You know what is there in workplace that is not present in varsity project?
Accountability: If someone is not doing their job, you can complain to the manager/boss. There is none in group project.
Authority: In varsity project, everyone is equal. I have no authority over others, even when I have much more experience/know-how. Telling prof one guy is slacking doesn't get much done.
Right to Choose: In work env, if I am highly skilled, I have the option to choose the place I work and thereby increasing the chance of like-minded like-skilled peers. In varsity project, I can get paired with a dumbass and have to bring myself to lowest common denominator. Sorry, I don't (have to) work with idiots in an equal setting. There's a reason that guy is doing some unrelated bank managerial job for $1k/month and I buy $1k worth of collectible items per month without blinking an eye.
If a varsity project is setup in a work env way where I get to interview who joins my team and have the right to fire them if they don't get their shit done, then I'm happy to do group project. Similarly, I'm happy to go thru the same process to join another person's team (if I consider them better).
PS: I did 2 group projects with a friend before that incident and we had zero issues with anything. Simply because we did the work and our skill levels were similar. He's working as Principle Engineer at Oracle now and it is no surprise.
I just read this fact in Hail Mary, but it doesn’t fully add up to me. If you fall flat on your back and wind yourself (phrenospasm) that triggers an immediate suffocation response which has nothing to do with CO2 and seemingly everything to do with a lack of oxygen.

If you lack oxygen because you can't breathe in, then CO2 will be building up because you can't breathe out.
Neither sound like a good explaination for the suffocation response being winded causes, because most people can hold their breath for a least a minute with too much discomfort. It's more likely due to a primitive response to unexpected airway restriction - the same as choking.
PS: pigs have the same CO2 response as us, maybe stronger as they can detect C02 at lower concentrations. I find that hard to reconcile with pig abattoirs killing pigs by lowering them into a pit of 90% CO2. N2 would do the same job without the pig realising what is going on, but CO2 is heavier than air so it stays in the pit, making it more economical.
