Are you living in 2012? Since 2013 and the snowden revelations, the allegation that IC does at least 30 days full take 100% of internet data traffic (and much longer for encrypted or interesting traffic) is an established fact. Why do you think https penetration is so high today? In 2018, and that big giant data center in Utah, its likely much greater than 30 days. It truly is wizard magic.

Technology companies that make DPI technology for censorship should DIAF. If you work at one, you are actively making the world a shittier place. That is all.

Please don't post unsubstantive rants to HN. The idea here is: if you have a substantive point to make, to make it thoughtfully; and if you don't, then not to comment until you do.

Didn't know you could do deep packet inspection on encrypted traffic?

Anyone who can shed some light on how they might be doing this? I'm curious.

I obviously don't know how they're actually doing it, but you can perform all kinds of analysis on traffic even when it's encrypted. You can look at the distribution of packet size, the time distribution of packets, you can analyze who is sending packets to whom. Traffic analysis like this has been a field of study since at least World War I. [0]

If you want to find Telegram traffic, you're probably looking at fairly small packets, often sent in bursts. If you're observing the sender and the receiver, you might be able to correlate the the outgoing messages from one user with the corresponding incoming messages of another user.

Of course, there are corresponding countermeasures Telegram could take: pad messages, combine messages, split messages, introduce random delays, distribute messages among a number of different endpoints. It's an endless game of cat and mouse.

It's not a good argument. Propaganda can always defeat morals, make people accept and do unspeakable things. Well, not all people, but still a lot of people.

Ever felt patriotic, proud of your country? That's how it starts.

Eh DPI? DIAF? Not familiar with what these mean. DPI = Dots Per Inch usually...

DPI = Deep Packet Inspection (it's in the article)

DIAF = die in a fire

In this context, DPI is deep packet inspection.

I very deeply disagree with your sentiment. This kind of thing is about normalising authoritarian intrusion into your life, and total destruction of privacy. Radical transparency for all is the worst possible scenario -- you, me, we all have secrets; Secrets are important for business, they are important for friendship, they are important for the continued prosperity of society. There are many things that you dont have the right to know, and I have the right not to tell you. You are talking about coercively forcing all secrets into the open. I can tell you that many would not live productive, or even long lives if this was the case.

I would expect transparent society would be a very different society, whether it worse, I'm not sure. I hate having to keep secret because it inconvenient and costly but unfortunately in today society is necessary.

Those 3rd party scrapers they use also sell your banking / transaction history. NEVER GIVE AWAY YOUR BANKING CREDENTIALS FOR ANY REASON.

The price is the last price paid for the coin. So by definition, if nobody sold any coin, it would only take 250000-6000 dollars for the price to reach 250k.

Its not so much about how much money enters the market, but supply/demand for the underlying asset.

Nobody had a gun to the buyers/sellers head. Everyone knows what they are getting into, and markets are a zero-sum game. I have no ethical issues with making profit from trading. I'm sorry that you were not able to take the win. Maybe you should not play games?

You’re right, no-one got their guns out. But that isn’t how confidence tricks tend to work. I think the reality for a lot of the losers -globally - is that they were kind of desperate, desperate enough to believe that there was some immediate answer to their cash needs. I started off believing in the crypto dream, but last year started to realise it was not what I thought it was.

The limit is somewhere near M2 of planet Earth. Thats quite a high number! something like $10M USD/coin. Would be nice.

cost to hash, in electricity. If the cost of mining is greater than the price of the coin, the miners turn off their hashboards. Some like to think of this as a floor, however if everyone turned off their miners the system would fail to produce blocks. The network difficulty will take 2 weeks to adjust, and the miners will start mining again if it is profitable.

If the difficulty adjusts down to make mining profitable, that's because the miner is earning more coins, but each coin is still worth less than before.

Not necessarily. While there is a positive correlation to hashrate and price, the market sets the value of the coin.

Just because miners are making more or less coins does not make them worth less or more. Miners choose when and if they release the coins to the market.

It seems the definition of 'hacked' is getting looser and looser these days. Sounds like you just consumed services from a SaaS, thats 'hacking' today.

As others have stated; Land and Gold can be confiscated; Thieves, Governments, Inflation. Its also hard to move. Any lock can be broken; any safe cracked. I trust in AES with many iterations of SHA512 to protect my coins.

I feel you don't really understand the value that cryptocurrency is adding; It is by its nature very easy to move and cheaper to protect than Gold. Its the long bet against eventually everything will be eaten by the state; or by inflation.

Someone who is stealing your land can also steal your private keys/digital wallet.

Crypto gets stolen all the time and once it's gone you have no recourse. It also gets seized. And of course you can also just lose it which is realllly hard to do with land.

>Crypto gets stolen all the time and once it's gone you have no recourse.

Someone steals your wallet with USD, whats the difference?

People act all weird when the word Bitcoin comes up, but its really not that different from gold and USD. Well except it solves a few problems those have.

Cant things be both advantageous and disadvantageous?

> Someone steals your wallet with USD, whats the difference?

I don't store the majority of my money in my wallet.

> Someone steals your wallet with USD, whats the difference?

You lose a tiny amount of cash and get new cards from your bank. BTC is like carrying around your bank account, it's a whole different ball game.

Stealing your btc is also really easy, as xkcd showed a long long time ago: https://xkcd.com/538/
