Incest in human biology causes mutations that's bad in the long term.

Same for AI models trained on Kimi-3 or other models like Chinese models do. They suffer from the same issue.

Does OpenAI use optimistic UI updates? After you disabled the checkbox, it might have had failed in the backend (and not updated the UI).

Verify with devtools to see if that's the case.

---

for me, Youtube "auto-play" irks the me same way, and turning it off did not actually succeed in the backend, thus kept on left as on

Pretty naive take.

EU and US are slowing down while China doesn't slow down. In fact, they are pushing harder after gathering so much info from workers, and facial recognitions set in place for half a decade.

No signs of the US or EU slowing down

Do you live in a fantasy? Amazing

stop whining without any evidence.

I have no choice but to use Windows at home due to 200+ Steam games I own. Many work only on Windows only. Emulation don't work for most on Linux.

I got a separate PC just for linux btw, so no biggie

Meanwhile my steam library of 900+ works pretty much flawlessly on linux. Yes the odd esoteric game needs a workaround or two, but honestly if you browse the pcgamingwiki then you'd notice you also need to tweak them on windows too, such is the problem with older games.

Echoing this. I would have to go out of my way to find one that does not work simply by double-clicking the steam entry. This is on Arch

It does happen, but it's pretty rare. Specifically, the MechWarrior 5 games don't work with my VKB joystick out of the box (had to do some config shenanigans to get that to work), Rome II Total War crashes pretty regularly, and the sound doesn't work right in HBS Battletech (which is odd cause I'm pretty sure that's a unity game). But the vast, vast majority of my library works without any tinkering.

Ditto. Nothing I want to play doesn’t work on Linux / bazzite.

2 of my kids play a total of 3 games: Fortnite, Rocket League, and Madden NFL. We're locked in for a while.

I shelled out for a Steam Machine (SteamOS ≈ Arch Linux.) I do gamedev, and I figured having a test machine was a decent enough excuse for a purchase. It's working suprisingly well for the games I'm actually playing. They're playing better than on my last Windows desktop tower, even, presumably due to a better GPU.

Granted, catalogs vary - anti-cheat and DRM may not play nice, and EvE Online wasn't stable until I switched the renderer from D3D12 to D3D11 (and I haven't tried playing with multiple accounts) - but you might revisit Linux gaming if it's been awhile since you last have.

The enshittification of Windows has finally driven me to the point where Linux compatability is going to start affecting my Steam purchases.

Out of interest, are you doing any dev on the SM? If so, how is it for that?

Only a token test amount so far. The root filesystem is read-only by default, but without the whole Nix ecosystem, which is a little awkward (can't install packages even as root without changing that.) On the other hand, it comes with `distrobox` preinstalled, so it's easy enough to spin up a container and use that (including package installation.)

My raw notes are here: https://github.com/MaulingMonkey/notes/blob/master/programmi...

I have the separate PC just for Steam, at least that's how I look at it :]

There are far more penguins in my homelab

Whenever I used windows for games I just installed it on a partition and solely used it for steam. Nothing else installed but steam and games. Usually with the free unregistered version of windows because I could not care less about setting a desktop background. Too insufferable for any other use.

Very security engineer minded approach.

I block every port for VPS, then open one by one. Same approach here with files.

The only downside I see here is, knowing which one to allow. For ports, it's easy, but files can have many different extensions.

Apps/CLIs, etc create files with extensions you never encountered before, which can cause issues.

Other than that, I like the apporach

I like the analogy with ports, I also do the same - ufw deny all :)

Port numbers are convention

A "security engineer minded approach" would be: own what is executed on the box;

The youtuber is not an engineer but a fragrance educator.

He tried Gemini (Pro 3.1 w/ extended thinking) vs. Sonnet 5 Max to generate frag formulas.

Interesting trend in perfumary as Versace Paradoxe Virtual Flower gain traction due to AI usage (not bad but not great either)

The target audience is who needs raw speed.

Having the choice is good as you can make a trade-off between speed, perf, and quality.

Until last year, people had a single AI god they believed in (mostly Anthropic stuff). Now we have power to make choices (open-weights, SOTA, speed-optimized, etc) the same way you do for system designs.

It's not a criticism, I was really looking forward to trying out such a powerful model at this speed.

But I burn my 5$ allowance in 10 minutes ... and only because I was hitting rate limits, without it would probably be less than a minute.

I hear ya... the best option is to use company budget as normies will rack up ridciulous amount soon with that raw speed.

This is where stupid unions rubs me the wrong way.

Unions are for improving worker conditions such as getting the right pay, and right working environment.

They want to "run" the company themselves. Some might argue they are for keeping their current working env without Kalshi.

They are not the ones who has to bear the financial responsibilities of the company. They can shove it and just move on.

>They are not the ones who has to bear the financial responsibilities of the company.

When the company does poorly, who ends up hurting more? Is it the workers that get laid off, the executives that get another bonus, or the owner that remains a billionaire?

The company loses $, not workers. Workers get paid regardless whether the company loses money or not. Union workers rarely ever get fired over this especially.

Last year, the federal org i belong to laid off 20% of our workforce. The difference in personnel is noticeable, especially when the kpi's are trying to keep up with this year's targets. Next year, we are expecting more people to 'leave'.

There is a talk amongst Astrophysics (not a serious one) that we showed up too late as a civilization, and Universes thrived at around 5 billion years after the big bang.

Now we are 13.8 billion years old, and the Earth formed around 4.5 billion years ago.

That 7+ billion year gap is so huge, we cannot even detect any structures anywhere.

My thoughts out of my @$$

The possibility is the Mars where there is a big scar on it, where it could have had been a space war, but cannot figure out as it's been billions of years ago.

Same for the Saturn. It could have had harboring another life form and try to protect itself with the thick atmospheric shield in the gas giant to avoid the demise the Mars has encountered.

Hmm. i think you need a universe at least 10bn+ years for intelligent life as you need to have had cycle of earlier stars going supernovae to create the heavier elements.

That aside, 13bn years old is young. literally an instantaneous flash in the context of all time until heat death of the universe.

You see red dots/monsters on hubble or JWT.

Those are the ones fundamentally shifting theories about how early stars/blackholes/galaxies can form. (there are other factors like dark matters that can play a role but nobody knows for sure yet)

13bn years is not too young with that context in mind.

> That aside, 13bn years old is young. literally an instantaneous flash in the context of all time until heat death of the universe.

That alone is sus, because if we have infinity billion trillion years until the end, and we're so close to the beginning as to be a rounding error, it's weird.

That activity is massively massively frontloaded. About 95% of all stars that will ever form, have already formed. And with typical main sequence stars lasting under 10 billion years, we're already well into the decline of the universe.

> And with typical main sequence stars lasting under 10 billion years

For mid to large size stars, yes. But Red dwarf stars are expected to live for trillions of years.

Why is that _weird_? That implies recorded data / measurements going against the proven and tested theories, or the _design_.

No we don't have that much time. Over time there will no longer be huge areas of new star formation. Most stars are also rather short lived and can not sup6a plane like planet Earth.

Our sun, sol, has a neat live span so we can thrive for while if we don't **up this plants ecosystem.

But as far as I understood astro physics we are rather quiet early in the game.

>The possibility is the Mars where there is a big scar on it, where it could have had been a space war, but cannot figure out as it's been billions of years ago.

A Death Star ray just grazed Mars and ended up hitting Earth and killing the dinos. Coming soon on my Wattpad

I like to think that the dark forest theory is real but its just AGIs out there letting meatbags create a new AGI, and then they just reset the planet.

Whatever had happened 7 billion years ago coulda triggered what DF theory explains.

At the time there were species communicating, but all hell broke loose, and probably decided not to communicate with each other, hiding.

The mice are probably in on it.

> ...where it could have had been a space war...

This was a plot point in ST:SNW S4E1

Talking as if you are not disposable. If you are let go from your company, you can be easily replaceable.
